Mardyke Sluice Refurbishment

Following a successful tender submission Taylor and Sons were awarded a contract by the Environment Agency for the works required at Mardyke Sluice in Purfleet. The Project included both new build as well as refurbishment.
Guillotine Gate and Penstock - The existing guillotine gate and penstock were installed over 30 years ago and although still in working order required major refurbishment for them to extend their working life for a further 25 years.
Guillotine Gate Guides - As part of the contract it was required that the existing guides were shot blast and painted in situ'. This was carried out by Taylor and Sons painting division with precautions taken to prevent contamination of the water course.
Flap Valves - The two existing flap valves were in disrepair and required replacing with new, these were supplied to Taylor and Sons by Ham Baker and have now been succesfully installed complete with refurbished fairlead assembly and new winches.
Access Bridge and Stairway - The contract included the manufacture, supply and installation of a new access stairway and access bridge to replace the existing ladder arrangement which did not conform to the latest Health and Safety regulations.
Operating Gear - As part of a separate contract Taylor and Sons supplied the machined parts for the operating gear to the EA, These were manufactured at Taylor and Sons Head Office in Briton Ferry.
Installation - The installation of all the equipment was carried out in two stages, both being completed on time to a tight schedule thanks to the professionalism of Taylor and Sons and cooperation of the EA Site Team
