Exeter Chiefs Cable Stay Bridge

Taylor and Sons were awarded the contract to design, manufacture and install a 108m long cable span bridge with a 45m tower for Dean & Dyball over the A379 dual carriageway, joining the car park to the new Exeter City Chiefs Sandy Lane Stadium.

Consturction of the bridge consisted of 500 x 300 RHS for the main boom and an 'A' Frame fabricated totally from 12mm plates. There are fourteen spiral strand cables in total, ranging from 25mm diameter to 65mm diameter.

Much design and development time was devoted to the bridge with Taylor & Sons working closely with Dean & Dyball and the design team. Development of the bridge was taken to the stage of building a carbon fibre model and testing it in a wind tunnel by a fl

To ensure minimal disruption to the public, the bridge was erected in three sections over a period of five one night road closures.

Overall the project was very successful and is a good working example of Taylor & Sons delivering a project on budget and more importantly adhering to programme.

The bridge was fully opened well within the completion time for the start of the new rugby season in September 2006.
